Trailhead helps prepare you to earn various Salesforce Certifications. Currently, Salesforce offers over 20 exams that you can take to certify your knowledge of the Salesforce Platform!

Developers can be used for more complex business requirements where standard functionality doesn’t cut it. Developers can also integrate with other systems using API’s or Middleware. If you have any previous coding experience, becoming a developer is a great starting point (source).
