NESC Substation Standards Audit
Challenge: Our client sought to increase its daily and shift-level efficiency data (OEE) to identify underperforming areas more easily. However, improvements to its data reliability and accessibility across the organization were needed before our client could begin to harness data and analytics to enhance operational efficiency and decision-making at its facility.
Solution: After analyzing our client’s existing data infrastructure at the Power Train Operations (PTO) facility to target areas for optimization, Brooksource implemented advanced analytics tools and developed custom Power BI dashboards to streamline data processing and facilitate real-time insights. In addition to ongoing support and maintenance, Brooksource also provided training sessions for our client’s staff to ensure internal adoption.
Challenge: Our client was building toward an Agile Digital transformation as it shifted to a product-centric business model. After running into scaling and building challenges with its last partner, our client decided it was time to leverage the Brooksource Elevate program. As a Professional Services partner, Brooksource was asked to craft high-performing teams in niche and emerging technologies to drive cultural transformation and long-term retention.
Solution: Through Elevate, our client was able to gain access to Agile consultants to assist in the transformation and 100 hours of Brooksource-facilitated training. Our client initially started with a pilot Elevate class of just 12 resources. However, the success of that initial class resulted in our client reinvesting and growing the use of Elevate across multiple divisions. Thanks to our scalable solutions, Brooksource managed the onboarding and upskilling of 300 consultants throughout the transformation.
Challenge: Our client’s Transmission and Substation Engineering department struggled to both meet the high demands of grid modernization and attract associate-level engineers to address these growing bandwidth constraints. Remote plant locations, a shrinking interest in utilities as a concentration among recent engineering graduates, and ineffective workforce transformation initiatives, further complicated the challenges faced by our client.
Solution: Our client especially appreciated Elevate’s ability to enhance its workforce transformation program by adding operational structure, professional development, and access to our strategic talent pipelines. In less than 2 months, Brooksource screened and onboarded all 10 of the consultants for an initial pilot Elevate class. Throughout the program, these Elevate consultants will be paired with FTEs on our client’s Substation Engineering, System Protection, and Control teams to support substation upgrades, expansions, reliability improvement projects, and general equipment maintenance, in addition to receiving customized training and a Power Systems Engineering Certificate from Drexel University.
Challenge: Our client plans to invest over $7 billion in shaping the future grid by 2030. As preparation, our client’s Standards team must audit 5,000 pages of pre-existing standards for compliance. The 2023 National Electric Safety Code (NESC) update by the IEEE increased the urgency of this audit, giving just six months to comply with the new codes. Meeting this tight deadline posed a significant challenge for our client, given its limited in-house expertise and bandwidth capacity.
Solution: TBrooksource’s Anchor Model paired cost-effective associate consultants with a Standards SME who spearheaded the enterprise-wide standards project’s execution, acting as an anchor for both the management of our Elevate consultants and the coordination of our client’s cross-functional teams. This project audited and updated our client’s standards. Our team also documented any process changes and led group sessions to ensure visibility into findings, updates, and the onboarding of new equipment.
